INTERFAITH STATEMENT ON THE REFUGEE CRISIS
Issued on behalf of the Catholic Church in Scotland, the Church of Scotland, the Muslim Council of Scotland, and the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities.

“Our faiths instruct us not to fear the stranger, but to love our neighbour.  We view the desperate situation facing refugees currently seeking sanctuary in Europe with growing alarm.  We are compelled to speak out.  Our faiths in their different ways are rooted in the refugee experience, in what it means to be forced to leave a place where one’s very existence is threatened, in search of somewhere safer.  Our scriptures teach the importance of love and compassion for all who are destitute.  We are concerned by the dehumanising language used to describe people who are so desperate that they risk their lives, and we share the belief that all people have an inherent dignity and right to life.  We welcome the UK and Scottish governments’ willingness to offer a safe haven to these desperate people.  We urge them to back this with practical action to help as many refugees as possible, and we call on our communities to support this and make them welcome.”

PETITION  -  REFUGEE CRISIS
In response to Pope Francis’ appeal that all homes, parishes and religious institutes should be open to helping refugees, it has been decided to Petition both the Scottish Government and the Westminster Government, to urge them to be more generous in the numbers of refugees they are willing to accept, both those who have already made the journey into Europe, and those who are still in refugee camps in the Middle East.  At the back of the Church there are 2 Petitions:  One to Derek McKay our MSP in the Scottish Government and one to Gavin Newlands our MP at Westminster.
Please take the time to sign BOTH these Petitions before you leave the Church today.

REFUGEE CRISIS  -  BRIEFING
Also with regard to the Refugee Crisis, at the back of the Church you will find a copy of a Briefing Paper from the Justice and Peace Commission and a letter from Bishop John Keenan.  Please take one copy per household.

DIOCESAN SYNOD PREPARATION
This week we will look in more detail at the Spiritual Preparation for the Synod.  Studying and discussing the
synod’s topic is necessary for a successful outcome.  However, it would be a terrible mistake to reduce the synod to being merely a workshop.  The Holy Spirit must be allowed to direct the synod from its beginning to its end.  This is why the Church insists that we prepare spiritually.  The Icon of Our Lady of Paisley will visit each Parish for a week, which will be a time of special prayer together.  We will also be offered little retreats and various helps in prayer.  Icons will also be in the stall so that we can continue our devotion at home.  The Diocesan synod presents an opportunity for the renewal of the Church within our Diocese.  Please play a full role in the
synodal preparation and this will involve prayer as well as the sessions catechesis and consultation.
