You may be a little surprised to receive a letter at this time, eight weeks into the lockdown. I realise that I should have written much sooner to let you know that you and all the parishioners of St. James’ are in my thoughts and in my prayers.

You may be aware that each day we are able to stream Mass live. If you are not yet watching it, you can access it through the parish website www.stjames.rcpaisley.org.uk or on you tube by searching for Stephen McDermott and clicking on his icon which has a camera in the middle.

Each Friday we are streaming the rosary. You might like to join us. On a Wednesday and on a Sunday I am streaming a series of Reflections based on the Scriptures.

Over these weeks I have been overwhelmed by the kindness and thoughtfulness of so many people who have shown concern for my mother and me and also for Fr. Kieran Brady who is staying at St. Columba’s. This has manifested itself in numerous ways including the delivery of home baking and groceries. In fact Fr. Kieran and I are beginning to worry that we are gaining too much weight.

A number of people have taken out a standing order or put the equivalent of their weekly collection through the letter box of the parish house. It is good of them, and I am very grateful but my biggest concern at the moment is that we all keep safe and that no one in the parish causes themselves any hardship for the sake of the parish or places their health or well-being in any danger.

I know this is a really difficult time and that the self-isolation for many of our parishioners and friends and neighbours can be painful and a cause of anxiety. Please do not feel alone and please feel that you can call me at any time.

If there is anything that we as a parish can do for you please let me know. We have a number of parishioners who would be happy to be of help to you.

Yours sincerely
